David Ragan, No. 34 Front Row Motorsports Ford
Starting Position: 38
Finishing Position: 32

David Ragan started in 38th position for the Capital City 400 — a race that was threatened throughout the day by on-and-off rains. But the clouds cleared and the green flag waved on schedule under drier but cold conditions.

Ragan reported his Ford Fusion was tight-handling in the center of the turns, but he had moved up to 34th position by the first caution of the night on Lap 50. Air-pressure and chassis adjustments on the first pit stop helped, but the issues seemed to persist to some extent throughout the course of the evening.

Once again, the race was dominated by long, green-flag runs, which made it difficult to gain positions even as the car’s handling improved incrementally with each pit stop. Ragan was also hit with a speeding penalty on pit road on Lap 292. By the final restart of the night on Lap 389, Ragan was in 33rd and on the same lap as one other competitor, the No. 10 car of David Reutimann. He passed Reutimann in the final laps of the event to climb one spot to 32nd.

Comments from Front Row Motorsports team driver David Ragan after the Richmond race:

“Our car wasn’t bad. Early in a run, especially, it was everything I could want, and then it would tighten up. I think we could’ve been a little better. We’ll keep working on our cars back at the shop to get a little more out of them.

“Our pit crew had another good night. It’s always good to be able to count on them. There are a lot of new guys on the ’34′ pit crew this year and they’re really starting to gel as a group and hit their rhythm.”

David Gilliland, No. 38 Long John Silver’s Ford
Starting Position: 41
Finishing Position: 36

David Gilliland and the No. 38 Long John Silver’s Ford team started Saturday night’s race in 41st, but confident in their car’s race set-up and eager to run up the leaderboard.

Unfortunately, they didn’t have much chance to prove themselves as the team was struck with a mechanical problem just 32 laps into the event. Sitting in 35th position, Gilliland radioed crew chief Pat Tryson that he’d lost his brakes and needed to come in for repairs. After first investigating the problem on pit road, the team had to take their car to the garage, where they had to replace a master cylinder. Gilliland returned to the race 42 laps down in 39th.

The mechanical issue was especially unfortunate because Gilliland told Tryson on the team radio that the car was set up “closer than we’ve been at a track like this in a long time.” He raced competitive laps the rest of the event, picking up three positions to finish 36th.

Comments from Long John Silver’s team driver David Gilliland after the Richmond race:

“Yeah, that was frustrating because our Long John Silver’s Ford was actually pretty good later in the race. We just had a fluke thing happen with the brakes and it set us back pretty far. But, like I said, we made some pretty good progress with our race set-up, and that’s something that’s definitely going to help us in the future in our short-track program. But for right now, I can’t wait to get to Talladega.”

Statesville, N.C. (April 24, 2012) – The pairing of driver David Gilliland with veteran crew chief Pat Tryson is taking the No. 38 team to new places in 2012 – some experimental but most helpful. The team’s efforts resulted in a season-best qualifying effort (22nd) at Kansas Speedway last weekend, a clear sign of improvement in the team’s approach to intermediate tracks and the style of track that needed the most attention.

This week the Gilliland-Tryson duo heads to Richmond (Va.) International Raceway with the colors of Long John Silver’s on the No. 38 Ford Fusion. They’ll look to log more fast laps at the .75-mile, high-speed short track. Gilliland has 11 Sprint Cup career starts at Richmond, with a top finish of 18th (2008).

Comments from Long John Silver’s driver David Gilliland heading to Richmond:

“Pat (Tryson) has been a great addition to our team. We’ve worked really well together, and he’s brought a lot of great ideas and great experience. He’s taken a bunch of drivers to Victory Lane, so he knows what it takes. Any time you put a new crew chief and driver together, it’s going to take a little bit of time to get used to each other and really get in sync, but I think Pat and I are at a point where it’s really starting to make a difference.

“We unloaded pretty fast at Kansas last week and ran some really good laps in practice and then went out and had a really good qualifying run. And that was at a mile-and-a-half track, the kind of place that we consider to be the most challenging for our team. So that definitely says something and points to the progress we’re making as a team.

“Richmond is always a track that people look forward to. It’s a fun place for a race. It takes you back to the old-school, Saturday-night racing a little bit. The fans always come out for it and show their support. It can be a tricky track, though. You’ve kind of got the dimensions of a short track but with some higher speeds thrown in like some of the bigger tracks. Pit road can be a little hazardous, too, so you’ve got to always be on top of your game and not make any mistakes.

“We’ll have Long John Silver’s on our car for the second time this year. Our owner, Bob Jenkins, owns a bunch of Long John Silver’s and Taco Bells, and Richmond is one of the cities where he has restaurants. In fact, he has a Long John Silver’s right down the street from the track. Everyone should stop there on their way to the track Friday and Saturday.”

Statesville, N.C. (April 24, 2012) – David Ragan’s last visit to a short track brought solid results – a good-handling car and a top-25 finish at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway. A month later, the No. 34 team returns to the state of Virginia with the same Ford Fusion for another short-track race at Richmond International Raceway.

Ragan has also spent plenty of time running up front at Richmond in his Sprint Cup Series career. He has three top-five and three top-10 finishes at the .75-mile oval with a top finish of third in 2007. He finished fourth at both Sprint Cup events at the track last season.

The No. 34 team welcomes CAM Electric as an associate sponsor for Saturday night’s Richmond 400. The Baltimore, Md., company provides electrical installations and renovations and 24-hour emergency service.

Comments from Front Row Motorsports team driver David Ragan heading to Richmond:

“Richmond is one of my favorite tracks. It’s a short track but you get some higher speeds than you normally don’t associate with short-track racing. It’s got some longer straight-aways where you can really pick it up. The key is to get good forward bite coming out of those corners, so that’s what we’ll be concentrating on.

“We’re taking the same car we took to Martinsville, and we had a really good weekend there. We unloaded with a really good car and just worked on making it a little bit better throughout the practices. With Richmond being a two-day show, that’s going to be helpful for us. We’ve got one day to practice and qualify our car and get it ready to race on Saturday night. So I think we’re going to be in a really good starting position when we roll off the truck Friday morning.

“Night racing is always fun, and in Richmond it’s always a good show. It’s just a good track to watch a race as a fan. I’ve sat in the stands before to watch a race and you just feel like you’re right on top of the action. Most of us cut our teeth racing on Saturday nights at our local tracks, so this makes us feel right at home when we come to places like this.

“There are a couple different things to think about when you’re night racing. First off, it’s obviously cooler, so you’re going to have more grip. You also sometimes have to contend with the sun going down at the start of the race. It’s a night race, but it’s not quite dark when you start. So you might want a shaded tear-off on your helmet visor for the start that you can take off once it does get dark. And then one of the really nice things is that it’s obviously cooler in the car for the driver than it is during a day race. You’ll never hear anyone complaining about that part.”

David Ragan, No. 34 Barrett-Jackson Ford
Starting Position: 27
Finishing Position: 30

David Ragan finished 30th Sunday in a race where his car seemed to have a split personality, reacting very differently in different situations.

Ragan started 27th in the No. 34 Barrett-Jackson Ford on a cold and blustery day at Kansas Speedway. Like many other races in this season’s Sprint Cup Series, the day would prove to be full of long, green-flag runs and few cautions, providing few opportunities to advance through the field. But Ragan and crew chief Jay Guy felt like they had their Ford Fusion at a good starting point for the day and were ready to adapt as needed to stay competitive throughout the 267-lap event.

Unfortunately, the task of moving up the leaderboard became even more challenging after the No. 34 ran out of fuel just as Ragan was about to make his first pit stop of the day. He eventually coasted into his pit stall on Lap 48 for a fresh tank of fuel, tires and a chassis adjustment, but fell two laps down doing so under green-flag conditions.

In a race that only saw three yellow flags and very little attrition, the team concentrated on making the car handle as well as possible to advance when and where they could. Ragan was now back in the 30s on the leaderboard and looking for his car to move better through the turns and gain some grip on the exits. But the team found themselves making changes – and then undoing them – when the car reacted differently when Ragan was in traffic versus when he was in clean air.

Once as far back as 37th, Ragan and the Barrett-Jackson team climbed back to finish just inside the top-30 mark.

Comments from Barrett-Jackson team driver David Ragan after the Kansas race:

“We had a better car at times during the race. It just reacted very differently in dirty air than when we were out in clean air. The guys did a good job chasing it trying to make it work for each situation. But unfortunately, we put ourselves in a bit of a hole at the beginning, running out of gas. And the racing didn’t really provide much opportunity to make up any ground.”

David Gilliland, No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford
Starting Position: 22
Finishing Position: 27

David Gilliland finished 27th in Sunday’s STP 400 in a Front Row Motorsports Ford that had found good speed all weekend. Like his teammate, Gilliland’s biggest challenge was adjusting to changing track conditions and how his car reacted over a long, green-flag run.

The No. 38 team started 22nd after its best qualifying effort of the year. In the early part of the race, Gilliland reported his Ford Fusion was tight-handling through the turns and that his splitter was hitting the track. The team went to work on the issues on each of its first three pit stops, but by Lap 104 they had slipped back to 31st. But with each adjustment, the No. 38 Fusion’s handling gradually improved, and quick work by the MHP Pit Crew helped pick up spots on pit road. By a Lap-140 restart, Gilliland was up to 26th.

As the day wore on and the sun came out, the track conditions seemed to change. And by Lap 200, Gilliland was reporting his car was “tighter than it’s been all day.” In their final pit stop of the day, the team made a green-flag stop on Lap 233 for fuel, tires and an air-pressure change, and returned to the track in 28th. He picked up one more spot in the final 34 laps to finish 27th.

Comments from Front Row Motorsports team driver David Gilliland after the Kansas race:

“Our car was actually the best car we’ve had at a track like this this year. Pat (crew chief Pat Tryson) and the guys did a really great job on it all weekend. We made some improvements during the race, and the pit crew was just knocking out great stops all day. We were just a little too tight. I couldn’t run the same low line that a lot of the other guys were running. But the weekend as a whole was a good step forward for this team.”

The 1.5-mile oval could be the scene of Ragan’s first top-20 finish with Front Row Motorsports. His previous six Sprint Cup starts at Kansas have seen him run in the front half of the pack and the No. 34 team is working to keep him there during Sunday’s STP 400. NASCAR statistics over the last eight races at the Kansas City, Kan., track show Ragan among the top 20 drivers in average running position (19th), driver rating (18th), green-flag passes (17th) and green-flag speed (20th).

Sunday’s race will be the second that the colors of the automotive auction house adorn the No. 34 Ford. The Barrett-Jackson scheme debuted in March in Phoenix, where Ragan drove it to a 25th-place finish.

Comments from Barrett-Jackson team driver David Ragan heading to Kansas:

“I like Kansas. It’s a little similar to Texas, which is another track I like but a place where we didn’t get the chance to run up to potential. We had a fluke thing send us to the garage for a few laps and that put us behind for the rest of the race. But (crew chief) Jay Guy and the crew put together a pretty good car for us and I expect we’ll have another decent car at Kansas, too.

“It’s great to have Barrett-Jackson back again. It’s always fun to work with new race partners and it’s even better when they return for more races. They just had one of their big auctions a couple weeks ago on Easter weekend. I caught some of it on TV while I was home in Georgia, and there were definitely a few things that caught my eye. But I’ve got a wedding to pay for coming up in December, so now’s not the best time for me to be bidding on anything. I might get in trouble for that. Maybe next year.

“This is the last time we’re going to race on this Kansas surface before they repave it. I always like the older, bumpier tracks. They have a lot of character. But I understand that after they get worn down so much, you have to repave them. So, it’ll be interesting to see what the changes bring. They’re going to add some progressive banking, too, I understand. That’ll change the racing there a bit, I expect – make it more like a Homestead (Homestead-Miami Speedway) type of track. We’ll find out in October when we go back.”

Statesville, N.C. (April 17, 2012) – David Gilliland would probably volunteer to drive the first construction truck into Kansas Speedway after Sunday’s STP 400. The driver of the No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford is eager for the speedway to add some additional banking to the 1.5-mile oval in a repaving project scheduled to begin after this weekend’s Sprint Cup Series race.

In six career starts at the Kansas City, Kan., track, Gilliland’s top finish is 22nd (2006 and 2008). The seven-year Sprint Cup veteran looks to improve on that record this weekend and in October when the series returns after the speedway’s repaving.

The Kansas race will allow some NASCAR fans to see their name on a Sprint Cup Series car. The No. 38’s decklid will carry the logos associated with the Belmont Abbey College NASCAR Kinetics Team and the names of fans who attended the team’s race-viewing event last week in Concord, N.C.

Comments from Front Row Motorsports driver David Gilliland heading to Kansas:

“Kansas is another one of those mile-and-a-half tracks that we’re really concentrating on as a team this year. We had a good car last week at Texas – a better car than our result showed – so I know we’re making some progress. Kansas is flatter, though, and so it presents different kinds of challenges. Me, I always like tracks with some banking over the flatter tracks. I like having something to lean on. So, the flatter tracks are always a bit more of a challenge.

“I was glad to hear they were going to add some progressive banking during a repave this year. It’s always interesting when they repave a track – you’ve just got to wait and see how it’s going to change. I know the drivers who tested at Michigan (International Speedway) after they repaved recently said it’s crazy fast and has lots of grip. So it’ll be interesting to see the changes at Kansas, too, when we come back in the fall.

“We’re taking the same car to Kansas that we ran at Fontana. It ran pretty decent for us at Fontana and we learned some things that we knew we wanted to work on. Pat Tryson, my crew chief, has won at Kansas before, so he brings a lot of ideas and experience to help us get better, too. We just need to keep making progress on these mile-and-a-half’s, and I think we are. We’re not looking to light the world on fire, just continue to make improvements each week.

“It’s always cool to have fans’ names on the car. It’s like having them along for the ride. We’ll have a bunch on the decklid this weekend from a program done by the local NASCAR Kinetics team at Belmont Abbey. Hopefully we’ll give them a good run.”

David Ragan, No. 34 Scorpion Truck Bed Liners Ford
Starting Position: 21
Finishing Position: 35

David Ragan and the No. 34 team brought a fast Scorpion Truck Bed Liners Ford to Texas, qualifying for 21st position on Saturday night’s starting grid. But like the rest of the drivers, he soon found out his biggest competition was going to be the fierce winds that had been sweeping through the area all day.

The strong gusts, along with the changing track conditions as the night wore on, made the handling of the No. 34 Fusion a bit unpredictable. About 80 laps into the 334-lap event, Ragan told crew chief Jay Guy the car seemed to “do something different on every lap.”

The wind proved to provide the biggest issues on the evening, with the race only being interrupted by two caution periods for debris. At Lap 200, with Ragan in 29th position, the windy conditions took a toll on the team. The driver reported his window net had broken loose after flapping in the strong gusts all night, bending and finally breaking the clasp that attached it to the car. He was forced to go to the garage for a quick welding repair and returned to the track 18 laps down in 35th.

The Scorpion Truck Bed Liners team maintained that position on the leaderboard for the rest of the night, finishing 35th and earning a bonus point for leading a lap under caution.

Comments from Scorpion Truck Bed Liners team driver David Ragan after the Texas race:

“We had a pretty good Scorpion Truck Bed Liners Ford. But the wind just made it impossible to run any consistent laps or to make any changes that would stick. And then we lost a bunch of laps having to go to the garage. I could hear the window net taking a beating all night and it finally gave. Jay Guy did a good job to fix it pretty quick, but we were too many laps back to make it up.”

David Gilliland, No. 38 ModSpace Ford
Starting Position: 35
Finishing Position: 31

David Gilliland took the green flag of the Samsung Mobile 500 in 35th position, ready to get the most out of his No. 38 Ford. The blue-and-green paint scheme showcased support from ModSpace, United Rentals and Chipewyan Prairie First Nation. And with Texas Motor Speedway being one of Gilliland’s favorite tracks, he was looking to have a good night.

The No. 38 team had their Fusion handling well after much trial and error over the course of the weekend. But, like everyone else, Gilliland was battling a strong wind that was knocking the cars around the track. The driver reported to crew chief Pat Tryson that his car was too “free” throughout the first 100 laps of the race, and the No. 38 crew worked on each pit stop to tighten it up. About one third of the way through the race, Gilliland was in 33rd position and still battling the tough weather and changing track conditions.

With two early debris cautions behind them, the team was then forced to try to gain ground under green-flag conditions for the rest of the race. This proved challenging, as Gilliland reported his ModSpace Ford was strong at the start of a run but became harder to drive as the run wore on. He was able to gain two positions under green in the latter part of the evening to cross the line in 31st.

Comments from ModSpace team driver David Gilliland after the Texas race:

“Those were some challenging race conditions. The winds just really made it tough. Our No. 38 ModSpace Ford got better over the course of the weekend and better over the course of the race itself. But it’s tough to make up positions under those long green-flag runs.”

Statesville, N.C. (April 10, 2012) – David Gilliland is ready to get back to racing after NASCAR’s off week, returning to one of his favorite tracks with a new primary paint scheme. The driver of the No. 38 Ford will show off the blue-and-green colors of ModSpace this week as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series travels to Fort Worth, Texas, for Saturday night’s Samsung Mobile 500. The No. 38 team is off to a good start in the 2012 season, and looks to improve on consistent performances at the high-banked, 1.5-mile track at Texas Motor Speedway.

ModSpace partners with United Rentals and Chipewyan Prairie First Nation to support the No. 38 car in Gilliland’s 12th career start at the high-speed oval. The Texas race weekend marks the first of several primary sponsorships with ModSpace on Gilliland’s Ford. The modular construction provider is also a season-long associate on both the No. 38 car and David Ragan’s No. 34.

“ModSpace is very excited to be the primary sponsor alongside United Rentals of this weekend’s event at Texas,” said William Mann, Vice President of Motorsports for ModSpace. “The entire ModSpace organization is very eager about seeing the debut of the No. 38 car’s paint scheme this weekend. David has experience at Texas Motor Speedway and this should produce a great outcome for the No. 38 team.”

Consistency has been a theme of Gilliland’s 11 career starts at Texas, where he has finished as high as 15th. With the pit crew working well and valuable experience at this week’s track, the No. 38 team is poised for another strong finish in the Lone Star State.

Comments from ModSpace driver David Gilliland on Texas Motor Speedway:

“Texas is always a fun place to race. There’s room to pass up high if you have to since the groove has gotten wider over the years. The track really feels fast and there’s a lot of room to run around. With a good car there’s a lot of opportunity to make things happen.

“It’s great to have ModSpace on board this year. They’ve been on our car all season so far, but this is the first race where they’re primary. So, it will be cool to finally run their paint scheme. We’ve been showing it off since we first announced the partnership earlier in the season but it will be cool to finally see it on the car and under the lights at Texas Motor Speedway.

“Martinsville may not have looked like the best run, but I was really proud of the effort by our team. Pat (crew chief Pat Tryson) and the guys worked hard on the car all day and they really helped us out in a few places where we couldn’t gain any spots on track. I’m excited to get into Texas after the week off. We’ve got a great car and we’ve run well there in the past so I’m really looking forward to it.

“Last year we had a bit of bad luck there and just couldn’t get anything going, but it’s a fun track and I feel like we can run well there. I’m confident in the car we’ve got right now and the team’s been great the past few weeks so I think we’re in a good position to put a solid run together this weekend.”

Statesville, N.C. (April 10, 2012) – When David Ragan was at Texas Motor Speedway one year ago, the rest of the NASCAR Sprint Cup field was lining up behind him. The big, fast oval in Forth Worth was the scene of the first of Ragan’s two poles on the 2011 season.

Ragan returns to the 1.5-mile track for Saturday night’s Samsung Mobile 500 in the No. 34 Ford of Front Row Motorsports. Scorpion Truck Bed Liners returns to Ragan’s Ford Fusion for the race weekend in a newly added race to its sponsorship schedule after making its NASCAR debut in the season-opening Daytona 500. The Cloverdale, Ind.-based company will also be on the No. 34 car for the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Scorpion is the official bed liner, window film and protective coatings line of Ragan and Front Row Motorsports

“Scorpion is very excited to be working with Front Row Motorsports and the No. 34 car of David Ragan again in Texas,” said Clayton Tomasino, CEO of Scorpion. “It’s been great to see the fans embrace our brand and show their support through social media and elsewhere and we look forward to that support growing even more.”

Ragan has a history of speed at Texas Motor Speedway. In addition to claiming the pole in the 2011 spring race, he has earned two top-10 and seven top-15 finishes in his 10 Cup career starts at the track.

Comments from Scorpion Truck Bed Liners team driver David Ragan heading to Texas:

“It’s great to have Scorpion Truck Bed Liners back on our No. 34 Ford Fusion. We had them with us down in Daytona for their very first NASCAR race and we’re excited to have them back. It’s always good to bring a new sponsor to the sport, and it’s even better when they come back and say they want to do more. They’ve got some pretty cool products in their bed liners, window films and other protective coatings, so we hope to send some new customers their way.

“That orange-and-black paint scheme will look great under the lights at Texas, too. Night racing is always fun and Texas is such a great track. It’s such a fast track and it’s one of my favorite tracks to go to. It’s a tricky racetrack, though. You’ve got to get your car coming out of the turns really well so you can just put the hammer down and let your Roush-Yates horsepower take over on the straight-aways. Texas isn’t necessarily a finesse track but you’ve kind of got to finesse coming off those turns. It’s not hard to wind up in the wall if you overdrive it. We’ve all seen that.

“It’s great to go back racing again after the week off. It was great to have some downtime and spend time with family. I got to go out to the Masters in Augusta (Ga.) one day last week and that was a great time and a great experience that I don’t normally get to do every year, even though I’m from Georgia. Some friends of ours always get tickets every year, but typically we’re always racing, coming off a race weekend and getting ready for another race the following weekend. But we had the off-weekend this year, so this was the first time I had some downtime to be able to do some of the things that normal people get to do.”
